Little girl's funeral planned instead of birthday party
Her neck caught in SUV's power window

CALGARY -- Instead of celebrating their daughter's third birthday yesterday, a Calgary family was planning her funeral after the tot died in an awful accident.
"This is a young family completely destroyed today," said acting Det. Andrew MacLeod.
The child, one day short of her third birthday, was pronounced dead Tuesday after being caught in the power window of the family's SUV.
MacLeod said the girl's mother had taken the day off work to do some birthday shopping and plan a party for her daughter.
She made a quick stop at her office, leaving the tot and six-year-old son in the car with the engine running. The girl freed herself from her car seat and activated the power windows while the boy slept.
A man heard the girl's cries, rushed over and freed the girl from the window. He put her on the front seat while he ran to call 911.
In the meantime, the mother returned to the car and, assuming her daughter was sleeping, buckled her into her seat and drove her son to school.
Forty minutes later, the mom noticed something wrong with her daughter, said MacLeod.
"She noticed she was unresponsive and that her daughter's lips were white," he said.
She pulled over and called 911. Two Calgary police officers began doing CPR on the girl until paramedics arrived.
Despite their efforts, the toddler went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at hospital.
