When you need your preschooler (or toddler, for that matter) to pick up, what works best at our house is to tell him/her/them to put the toys back "in their homes."
At non-cleanup times be sure to reinforce the notion by talking about how nice it is that "everything has a home," and how happy things/people are when they are in their homes.
** Also, the same concept - putting something back in it's home - works miracles when it is time to put a stuffed animal or cool truck from the toy aisle back on the shelf.
Putting something (especially an animal) back "with it's brothers" is another way I like to phrase it.
