I had several pluses going for me last evening, so I *know* I didn't go into it with a bad attitude...A little shopping with my fellow Twilight-loving neighbor, a little dinner, wine with the movie since we were seeing it at the movie tavern...and still it managed to be sort of…I cringe to even to say it…okay…disappointing. FUN - don't get me wrong - but there's a list of things that are just innately kinda lame about this (and undoubtedly, all future parts of the series) movie:
1. Bella's blinking problem - is this a characteristic of over-acting? I dunno. The constant blinking and over-breathing (yes - as a huge fan of the books who has read them not once, but twice over - I know her inability to breathe is a huge theme in the book - it's not the chest-clutching, hole-in-the-chest-missing-Edward non-breathing I'm complaining about. My friend and I cracked up at the very last sound of the movie before the screen goes black - Bella gasping.)
2. Edward's mouthful of "problem" - is it vampire teeth that makes his mouth look uncomfortably full? Are those his real teeth? Is it the attempt to overcompensate for his true British accent? I dunno. I just know something that was in Edward's mouth was distracting to him, and to me.
3. The just plain dorky acting in general. I'll refrain from raking anyone's favorites over the coals, but *sigh* - I guess it's too late to switch anybody important out (even though they switched out the girl who played Victoria, midmovie).
I still think Kristin Stewart makes the perfect Bella (for me) - it's just those two mannerisms that drive me crazy. I think, otherwise, she's a fine actor. And Robert Pattinson makes a pretty good Edward. Edward's self-hating angst gets to me, but I realize that's a large part of his character in the book, so I gotta swallow that.
My friend and I discussed, on the way home, how the movie's makers KNOW any further Twilight movies will make tons of money anyway - no matter how good or bad the acting is...and the target audience of teenyboppers only seems to demand a few key criteria - some action, some romance, some cool effects and (as pointed out in a review I read before I went) torsos - lots and lots of well-developed torsos...In that way, the movie delivers.
On a positive note - my favorites were the guy who played Aro, the guy who plays Laurent, and the CGI werewolves. Even the guy who plays Jacob did a passable job, I think. His torso certainly did a great job.
Dakota Fanning is disappointingly forgettable and barely deserves mention as evil Jane...which is too bad, as Jane was a pretty fascinating character to me, as were all the "Vulturi" - who mostly just sat there and looked to be in pain during their part of the movie...oh well...
So there it is...I think I remember saying the same thing about Twilight (the first movie) - All in all, a fun part of a night out with friends, just don’t expect the cost of your theater ticket to yield superb, Oscar-winning-acting and you'll be alright.
