do you have one close to you? We have one opening about a mile down the road from me. I use to have to drive quite a ways to a shop but not much longer. :)

I think the closest Starbucks is in Kelowna - about a 3.5 hour drive from Nelson. The college used to brew Starbucks coffee, but it was too expensive & got too many complaints from those used to the delicious local brews (ie Oso Negro, Kicking Horse, etc.) I like Starbucks coffee, but some say it tastes burnt - and really, why ship coffee in from so far away when there are such awesome local brands?

I think you are right Leanne.
I don't even drink coffee, so I don't pay too much attention :) I know there is a big following for Oso here! My mom doesn't like it though -- says it tastes like it was brewed through a burolap bag

I live in Seattle so we have Starbucks on about every block. I love the Drive-thru ones :)

They are on just about every corner here too, and in every grocery store, inside many banks and bookstores as well. I think I must have 8-10 stores within a 3 mile radius.

Edited to add...they recently opened one up in town. LOVE the Pumpkin Spice Latte! :lick:

We have one just a few minutes away from my work. I've gotten into the Starbucks habit.

We have one on the other side of the lake...about a 20 minute drive...but I am boycotting them right now!

We had a lady out here, that called and asked the corporate office, if they would be willing to donate coffee for the troops overseas. Her brother is/was over there, and that was 1 request he and his friends had. When she called they told her that they don't do donations like that....that their EMPLOYEES usually donate their free weekly 1 lb of grounds that they get and that Starbucks thought that was sufficient!

It really ticked me off, when a few weeks later, I turned on Oprah to see that Starbucks had donated $100 gift cards to the people in her audience for her favorite things show! Guess, they figured they got more publicity that way, than they would by donating to the troops!

I live in Portland and they are EV-ERY-WH-ERE. The one next to the children's school is our business partemer and they are absolutely Godsends. They donate coffee ( and lots of it ) to all of our events, our children have art literacy once a month where they study a different artist, and every month the manager has an art opening where a different class's art work is hung on the walls and displayed. The only art in that store is the art from our school. They also paid their employees to wor at our school auction  that was hands down the best gift they've given us.

I know people like to support mom and pop coffee shops and resist the " monopoly" that SB has on the market, but I think on local levels they are a great organization, and they have been here in the NW forever and LONG before there was one on every corner across the world, so to me, they still feel like my local coffee shop, yk?

Plus they are a GREAT way to invest in real estate....go to the worst area of your town and find out where a Starbucks is going in. Buy a house for dirt cheap and within 5 years, the neighborhood will have doubled in value...happens every time ;-) thos guys know way before we do which neighborhoods are gonna turn ;-)

There's a Starbucks within walking distance from me....but I only go rarely. I can't afford the SB Habit!

there are 4 starbucks within walking distance (well 1 mile, I consider that walking distance). The closest is 2 blocks away.

There are many many more over 1 mile from here too. We have lots.

Just heard through the grapevine that one will be opening in our town... interesting... I don't think the local shops have a whole lot to worry about since they have a loyal clientelle and the Starbucks will be in a different part of the town from them

I think there's a law in the Twin Cities that there has to be a Starbucks, Caribou, or Dunn Brothers every thirty feet. I only buy coffee at coffee shops if I'm meeting friends or am desperate and away from home. I despise paying that kind of money for a plain cup of Joe. I make a mean cup of coffee myself (using Starbucks French or Espresso Roast).

Now, if a fair trade coffee shop opened up ... I'd go a few times a week and buy all of my ground coffee there.

I live in Canada so the big thing around here is Tim Horton's or what some people call it, Timmy's. There is practically one on every block here.
