Mother's
Day Gifts from the Heart
By Debra Vaughn
With Mother's
Day just around the corner, people are scrambling to find the right
present to show good ole' Mom exactly how wonderful she is. Remember
though, the best gifts are the ones that come from the heart. It
is the thought that a child puts into the gift that makes it so
special.
Personally I prefer the hand crafted ones. They are a permanent
reminder of that year that are totally customizable to each individual
mom. Use your imagination when making that oh so special gift for
that oh so special mom. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Mom's
Survival Kit
Get a box, it doesn't have to be big or fancy, just any box will
do. Decorate the box to your mom's tastes. Inside the box lid, paste
a picture of yourself along with your name and the date. Next place
items that your mom always needs. Some examples are: Band-Aids (to
fix boo-boos), fingernail clippers, 35¢ so she can call you, a hand
print (so she can hold your hand when you aren't there,) a crayon
(to take the important phone message, Mom's can never find pens!)
a tissue (to wipe away the tears when you get hurt,) a small candle
(to let her know that she is the light of your life,) a personal
note from you to her and anything else you can think of to show
her how much you care.
Plaster
Hand Print
In large yogurt container, mix together 1 C. water and 2 1/4 C.
plaster of Paris (from lumber store) to thickness of a milkshake.
Pour into pie plate. When plaster is firm enough to hold a shape,
press your hand into and carefully lift up. Let dry. Record date
and your name on back.
Mother's Journal
Get any old cheap notebook and write a journal about what you have
learned from your mother that you carry with you from day to day.
It does not have to be a novel just something to show your mother
how much you know she cares for you and how she has effected your
everyday life. To turn this into a family project, pass the journal
around among your father and siblings to allow them to add their
thoughts and feelings!
Mom's Album
Take Mom down memory lane by going through your old family photos
and create a "Mom's Life" photo album. Start out with childhood
pictures of her and end with the most current pictures. To personalize
this a little more, add dates and thoughts from people who knew
her then and now as captions. This one is also a great family project
that should include her parents, siblings, friends, husband, yourself
and your siblings.
